The federal voluntary service in Germany is open to anyone, regardless of their citizenship. However, we are only able to take your application into account if you already live in Germany at the time of your application as we do not have a designated incoming programme for the federal voluntary service at our Berlin office. We recommend that citizens of the EU also have a look at the European Voluntary Service and that you check out the weltwärts Süd-Nord programme if you are from the regions of Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Both of these programmes are open to young people up to the age of 26.
Please understand that we do not have the means to support you financially and the voluntary service does not include accommodation.
Upon visa application, the embassy/Foreigners Registration Office/Ausländerbehörde will ask you to prove that you can cover your living expenses during your stay in Germany. The amount you need is about 800 Euros per month. The allowance that the voluntary service pays is about 320 Euros monthly and thus needs to be supplemented, for example by your own savings. In other words, a voluntary service will “cost” you approximately 500 Euros per month.
If you have a visa that permits you to do a voluntary service in Germany, you are not allowed to work a regular job to supplement your allowance. Working in Germany on a voluntary service visa will get you expelled from the country.
You cannot apply for public (state-funded) financial support in Germany.
To have a decent chance to find a place as a volunteer, you need to at least speak German at the level B1. It is possible that the embassy will do an oral test upon visa application.
You will only get a visa if you have a signed contract for a voluntary service that has been approved by the Bundesamt für Familie und zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben (Federal Agency for Family and Civic Affairs).
If you currently are residing in Germany as an au-pair, you can apply for a new visa for a voluntary service without having to leave Germany.
A tourist visa cannot be converted into a visa for a voluntary service.
Citizens of the EU and of the following countries do not need a visa for a federal voluntary service: Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and the USA.
Bewerbungen aus dem Ausland
Der Bundesfreiwilligendienst ist grundsätzlich für Menschen jeglicher Staatsbürgerschaft offen. Bei uns können sich jedoch nur Personen bewerben, deren Aufenthaltsort Deutschland zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung ist. Dies liegt daran, dass wir bisher kein besonderes Incoming-Programm haben, das es uns ermöglicht, z. B. bei der Wohnungssuche oder der Visumsbeschaffung zu unterstützen. Wir empfehlen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern der EU, sich ebenfalls den European Voluntary Service als eine Alternative zum BFD anzuschauen. Wenn Sie aus den Regionen Afrika, Asien oder Lateinamerika kommen, könnte für Sie auch das weltwärts-Programm interessant sein. Beide Programme wenden sich an junge Menschen bis 26 Jahre.
Bitte haben Sie Verständnis dafür, dass wir Sie nicht finanziell unterstützen können und dass der BFD keine Unterkunft beinhaltet.
Bei der Beantragung eines Visums fordert die Botschaft bzw. die Ausländerbehörde einen Nachweis darüber, dass Sie sich während Ihres Aufenthaltes in Deutschland selbst finanzieren können. Sie benötigen etwa 800 Euro monatlich. Das Taschengeld aus dem BFD beträgt – je nach Einsatzstelle – derzeit durchschnittlich 320 Euro pro Monat. Sie müssen also noch ungefähr 500 Euro selbst finanzieren, z. B. aus Ersparnissen.
Wenn Sie ein Visum für einen Freiwilligendienst in Deutschland haben, dürfen Sie nicht arbeiten, um sich etwas dazuzuverdienen. Die Aufnahme einer Arbeit kann zur Ausweisung führen.
Sie können keine staatliche finanzielle Unterstützung in Deutschland beantragen.
Die meisten unserer Einsatzstellen möchten, dass Sie Deutsch mindestens auf dem Niveau B1 sprechen.
Sie können nur dann ein Visum beantragen, wenn Sie eine unterschriebene Vereinbarung über einen BFD vorlegen können, die durch das Bundesamt für Familie und zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben (BAFzA) genehmigt wurde.
Wenn Sie sich derzeit als Au-pair in Deutschland aufhalten, können Sie bei der Ausländerbehörde Ihr Visum für einen Freiwilligendienst ändern lassen, ohne ausreisen zu müssen.
Ein Touristenvisum kann nicht in ein Visum für einen Freiwilligendienst umgewandelt werden.
EU-Bürgerinnen und Bürger sowie Bürgerinnen und Bürger der folgenden Länder benötigen kein Visum für einen BFD: Australien, Israel, Japan, Kanada, Neuseeland, Südkorea und der USA.
